2017-2018 8U Program

8 & Under Hockey Program

USA Hockey and AYHL promote a developmental environment in which children between the ages of 6 - 8 can learn the basic skills of hockey (children age 5 can participate but will need a referral from a skating instructor).  Our successful  AYHL 8U program consists of 3 levels:  Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.

Overview

  • Players will be placed on teams according to age and/or ability
  • Practices will be cross ice and follow the USA Hockey ADM (American Developmental Model)
  • Increase opportunities for players to touch and handle the puck.
  • Stress participation, fun and skill development.
  • Provide a positive environment for learning the fundamental skills of hockey.
  • Encourage creativity with and without the puck.

Evaluations

Evaluations will begin on October 1st and will take place during the month of October, primarily on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Practice Schedule

8U Advanced and Intermediate teams will have practices 3 times per week, while Beginner teams will have practices 2 times per week.  Check the practice schedule link on the top right section of this page for dates and times.

Friendlies and Jamborees

Friendlies are games set up with 8U teams from other associations. This is coordinated by your Team Manager or Coach and is not part of the current ice schedule.

Jamborees are fun events where multiple games are played cross-ice on one sheet of ice.  No score is kept and teams will play two to three "friendlies" in an hour.

AYHL hosts the Jingle Bell Jamboree at Family Sports Center in late December (right after Christmas).
